Electrolysis is the permanent removal of human hair follicles. This is achieved by inserting a very fine needle into the hair follicle and gently applying a small amount of electricity. This causes cellular destruction and ultimately halts the ability of the hair follicle to produce a hair.

Electrolysis has been in use for more than 100 years. It works successfully on all types of hair and skin colour because it targets individual hair follicles. Electrolysis is an option for hair removal on most parts of the body, including but not limited to upper lip, chin, legs, underarms, back, bikini-line and eyebrows. Contact us to find if this is the best solution for you.

Electrolysis is not a one-time treatment. Multiple sessions are required to achieve permanent hair removal. Electrolysis is considered the best option for permanent hair removal. However, individual factors which cause hair growth must be considered, including but not limited to hormones, heredity and certain medications and medical conditions.

Who should not have electrolysis, and what areas are not suitable?

Electrolysis should never be done for people who have a pacemaker. Also, electrolysis should never be done on the inside of your nose or ears, or to remove hair from a mole or birthmark. If you are uncertain, please speak to us for advice.

What to expect after treatment

Following your electrolysis session, your treated skin may temporarily be red, swollen and tender. This may last up to 24 hours and is a common side-effect. Many people find that the reaction doesn’t last beyond a couple of hours.

Care after treatment

Following electrolysis treatments, your hair follicles are open for 48 hours. To avoid bacteria getting into the follicles during this period:

  1. Do not put any fragrance or any alcohol-based products on the treated area for 24 hours.
  2. Do not scratch the scabs that result from treatment, as this can cause scarring. Allow them to fall off naturally. This is nature's way of healing the follicle that has just been treated.
  3. Wear mineral make up only, if you wish to cover up the redness.
  4. Avoid excessive sweating. Sweat can cause bacteria to enter into the open follicles and cause minor infection.
  5. Always use sun screen.
